Celebrating the Joel Stern Pipeline Scholarship at NAMWOLF

We are all looking forward to another meaningful and enjoyable NAMWOLF Annual Meeting. A highlight of the event, and one that is especially meaningful to our firm, is the Pipeline Scholarship Award ceremony.

EM3 is proud to be a dedicated sponsor of this scholarship, named in honor of Joel Stern, a leader in advancing diversity and inclusion through the legal process and within the profession. Joel’s example has inspired good works that have benefited countless people, including the many deserving law students who have received the Joel Stern Pipeline Scholarship Award.

Recently, we had the pleasure of reconnecting with one of these scholars, Nia Anderson, who is now in her final year of law school. Nia embodies the very reasons EM3 supports this scholarship. We spoke with her about her journey, and excerpts of our conversation follow.

Nia Anderson

Nia, what was the experience of applying for the scholarship like for you?

Applying for this scholarship gave me an opportunity to do something that law school does not always leave much room for: pause and reflect on why I am here and the kind of lawyer I hope to become. I was able to tell the story behind my journey, including my commitment to creating pathways into the legal profession for students and communities who have historically been underrepresented in it. Being selected was incredibly meaningful because it showed me that my story, my work, and my vision for the legal profession were seen and valued. It reminded me that there are people and institutions within the legal community who are willing to look beyond a résumé and invest in the potential of someone who is working to make the profession more accessible to those coming behind them.

How has the scholarship impacted your life?

This scholarship has impacted me far beyond the financial support it provided. It changed my perspective on what it means to pursue a legal education. Law school can make it easy to believe that the only way to become a lawyer is to take on significant debt and simply find a way to endure it. This scholarship showed me something different: that if you tell your story, remain committed to your purpose, and continue creating space for others, there are people who will see something in you and choose to invest in your future. That investment has strengthened my belief that there is a place for me in this profession and that the work I am doing to open doors for others matters. I hope to carry that belief forward throughout my career by becoming the kind of lawyer who not only succeeds in the profession, but helps others see themselves in it. That is why investments like this scholarship matter. A firm may think it is supporting one law student, but it is really investing in the person that student will become, the people she will mentor, the doors she will open, and the communities she will ultimately serve. Your investment can become someone else’s reason to believe that they belong here, too.

Nia closed our conversation with this message of thanks:

“Thank you again for your support and for giving me the opportunity to share my experience!”

EM3 is grateful to be part of the journey of scholars like Nia, and we congratulate this year’s recipients.
